10 Business Challenges Every Entrepreneur Must Face When Building a Business From Scratch

Are you an entrepreneur? If you are, then I believe you will familiar with the pattern or business challenges faced when starting and building a business from scratch. If you are not an entrepreneur but you dream of becoming one someday, then I think you will find this article worthwhile.

    Round Coffe Tables

Why am I writing on such a topic? I decided to write on the "10 business challenges every entrepreneur must face when building a business from scratch" to give entrepreneurs a glimpse of what to expect when they set out to start a new business venture. I am not writing to show my writing skills. Moreover, I am not a professional writer; I am an entrepreneur and investor to the core. I simply write to share my knowledge on building a business with anyone who is willing to learn.

    Round Coffe Tables

This article is not meant to discourage or scare you from going into business. Instead, I wrote this article to prepare and highlight you on the business challenges to expect and how to handle them. Just as the popular saying goes:

"He that is prepared has half won the battle."

Below are 10 Business Challenges Every Entrepreneur Must Face When Building a Business from Scratch:

    1. Developing the Vision and Idea:

This is usually the first challenge faced by every entrepreneur. Finding the right business opportunity or creatively developing an idea is certainly not an easy task. I call "Envisioning the idea" the first true task of an entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur, you must develop the ability to see what others cannot see. While others see problems, you must see opportunities.

But seeing opportunities is just the first task. The main challenge is going to be your ability to forge that opportunity into a business idea. I see this as a business challenge because the process of transforming opportunities into business plans is like trying to turn lead into gold. I call it the process of "Creating Value out Of Nothing." If you are not an entrepreneur, you might not be familiar with the process. The process of:

    - Identifying a problem
    - Seeing an opportunity in the problem
    - Coming up with a solution
    - Developing your opportunity into a business idea
    - Integrating your solution into the business plan

Another way "developing the vision and idea" will be a business challenge is that an entrepreneur must sometimes assume the role of a sorcerer. Let me explain in detail. While others dwell in the past and present, an entrepreneur must envision and forecast the future. An entrepreneur must always be ahead of his time or else he might lose his relevance. He must have the ability to bring into present what is yet to be. Let me give you some practical illustrations:

In the late 70s and early 80s, while IBM saw increase in demand for their mainframe computers, Steve Jobs envisioned a personal computer in every home and Bill Gates envisioned the need for easy to use software for personal computers.

While everyone saw humans flying as an impossibility, the Wright brothers envisioned a flying machine.

Back in those days when cars were custom made and exclusively for the rich, Henry Ford envisioned affordable cars for the masses.

I believe with these few examples, my point is clear. Developing the vision and idea is the first true task of an entrepreneur.

    2. Raising Capital:

After developing your idea, the next challenge you are going to face is the challenge of raising capital. As an entrepreneur, you are the only one who knows the idea to the core. You are the only one who knows the story of the future. Trying to convince investors about something that doesn't exist is definitely a challenge.

There is more to raising capital than just simply asking for money. Most investors want to invest in already established businesses with minimal risk. When building a business from scratch, raising capital will definitely be a business challenge you must face.

To overcome this challenge, you must develop the ability to sell your idea and vision to potential investors. When I say "sell your ideas", I mean improving your communication skill and your manner of presentation. In the game of raising capital, you must have a good story backed by a strong business plan. If you are interested in learning how to successfully raise capital, you can check other articles I have written.

    3. Assembling a Team:

The third challenge you must face in the course of developing a business is assembling the right team. When I talk about a team, I am not talking about regular employees. I am talking about a "round table strategic business team" that will meet regularly to brainstorm on ways to grow your business.

As an entrepreneur, you are bound to have strengths and weaknesses. That is the more reason you need to assemble a strong team that will cover up for your weaknesses. A team is a necessity in your quest to build a business. Now finding a business team is just the first hurdle, transferring your passion and vision to your team is the real piece of cake.

You must strive to make sure your team sees the future you see. They must believe in your possibilities and must also be passionate about making that possibility a reality. If they can't grasp your vision, if they can't see they future with you, then they are not worthy being your team.

Your strategic business team should comprise your banker, financial advisor, accountant, attorney or legal adviser and any other specialist that will be of tremendous impact to your business. A question on your mind might be "how am I going to pay this team? My answer is I don't know. You will have to figure it out yourself or better still, you can consider bringing them on board as partners.

If you are still at loss with the thought of assembling a business team, then I will recommend you either take some time in learning how to build a business team or you can visit strategicbusinessteam.com to get some advice.

    4. Finding the Right Location:

You might feel that finding a good location is a piece of cake but I bet you that finding a good location at the right price is definitely not easy. I don't have much to write on this but I feel it is worthwhile I bring it to your notice so you can prepare for it. The following are features you must consider before choosing a location. These features are subject to change with respect to the industry of your business:

    - Suitable price
    - Easy access to raw materials
    - Good road network.
    - Basic amenities and infrastructures
    - Adequate Power supply
    - Easy access to cheap labour
    - Nearness to high traffic roads
    - Moderate state and federal tax
    - Favorable Government fiscal and monetary policy
    - Favorable federal and state laws.
    - Current economic policy and political situation.

    5. Finding the Right Employees:

Most writers crank up the process of finding good employees as an easy task. They define finding an employee as simply presenting the job description and the right employee will surface. But I think it's more than that.

Those who are really business owners know how difficult it is to find a hardworking, trustworthy employee. Most employees want to work less and get paid more. Finding a good employee who will be passionate about delivering his or her services is quite difficult.

Employees are your representatives to your customers and the outside world. They are a reflection of your business culture and ethics. If an employee of yours is bad or rude to your customers, it is going to portray a bad image of your company. So you must be careful when hiring employees. Remember the golden rule of business; "Hire slow and fire fast."

    6. Finding Good Customers:

The sixth business challenge you will face is the challenge of finding good customers. Note the keyword "good customers." When in the process of building a business from scratch, you will come to find out that there are good customers and bad customers.

You must really be on guard for bad customers. Good customers are really hard to find. A good customer will be loyal to your company and will be willing to forgive you if you make a mistake and apologize. A good customer will try to do the right thing that will benefit both himself and the company mutually.

A bad customer will always look for loopholes in the company's policy to exploit and make some few gains. Bad customers will always try to exploit the company's goodwill and look for ways to rip off the company. Bad customers are responsible for bad debts.

Good customers build your business and bad customers will always try to liquidate your business. Just as you fire employees, you must also be prepared to fire bad customers without hesitation. In the game of trying to find a new customer, always remember the customer that sued McDonald's to court claiming the coffee was too hot.

    7. Overcoming Competition:

Competition is the next challenge you will face. Most individuals see competition as a plague but I see competition as a good challenge. I see competition as a benchmark for creativity, the main engine for innovation and quality products at great prices. Without competition, there will be no innovation and without innovation, the world will be stagnant.

I see competition as a welcomed challenge and I want you to do the same. Competition keeps us on our toes and drives us to constantly improve our products and services. But you must be warned. Competition can make your business lose its relevance in the eye of your customers so you must always be on guard. At this point, I leave you with a quote:

"If you don't have a competitive advantage, don't compete." - Robert Kiyosaki

    8. Unforeseen Challenges and Expenses:

Just as a sailor prepares for unexpected storm, just as a pilot is always on the watch for unpredictable bad weather and thunderstorms, so must an entrepreneur be prepared for what ever comes. Unexpected challenges can come in the form of:

    - Unexpected law suits
    - Inconsistent government policy
    - Not being able to make payroll
    - Unpaid bills and taxes
    - Unexpected resignation of staff from sensitive office
    - Bad debts from customers
    - Loss of market share
    - Dwindling working capital
    - Inadequate stock or inventory

These challenges, if not handled properly can ruin your plan to build a successful business from scratch. Another challenge you must expect is an unforeseen increase in business expenses. If not handled properly, it might result in constant negative cash flow and eventually, the business failure.

    9. Keeping Up With Industrial Changes and Trends:

Change in trends is really a business challenge you must be prepared for. Trends have made and broken lot of businesses. I know a lot of profitable businesses that have been wiped out by slight industrial changes and trends. A typical example is the Dot com trend, where many industrial based businesses were wiped out by new web based dot com companies.

When the Dot com era began, business owners were left with only two options. Either they join the dot com train or they get crushed by the dot com train.

Seasoned entrepreneurs know that trend is always a friend and are always willing to swiftly adjust their business with the current trend. Keeping your eyes open to spot trends is really a challenge but the big task will be your ability to quickly use the trend to your advantage.

    10. Exiting the Business:

"In the world of business and investing, your exit is more important than your entry. A good thumb of rule is this; exit before you enter." - Robert Kiyosaki

When building a business from scratch, you are going to face the business challenge of determining your exit strategy. Just as the quote above states, you have to plan your exit strategy before you even start the business. Most entrepreneurs run their business without any plans to exit and even if they have an exit strategy, they find it difficult to implement it.

Before starting a business, it is advisable to always plan your exit. There are benchmarks you can use to determine your exit from the business. Most smart entrepreneurs will use this benchmark as a target and once this specific target is reached, they exit the business. Examples of such benchmarks are:

    - Annual sales
    - Annual Turnover
    - Asset Base
    - Market Saturation
    - Customer base or number of users. This is more applicable to dot com companies.

Now when it comes to exiting the business, there are three exit strategies you can apply. The exit strategies are:

Turning over the business to professional managers: When your business reaches a certain stage of maturity, you can exit by turning it over to professional managers. In this case, the business still belongs to you but you are not involved with its day to day affairs. You will have to give up administrative role to assume the role of a watchdog. When you exit in this manner, you will have more free time to look into other projects or retire.

Selling the business privately: In this case, you are exiting the business by selling it to a private investor. In the business world, it is called M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions). After the sale and transfer of assets is complete, you have nothing to do with the business again.

Taking the company public: The unique thing about this type of exit strategy is that while you are selling your business (in form of shares) to public investors, you still own and control the business.

Please before you apply any of these exit strategy, I will advise you consult with your attorney or legal adviser. But ultimately, it's up to you to decide the exit strategy you want to apply. Always remember "your exit is more important than your entry."

At this stage, I thank you for reading and taking your time to learn. Till I come your way again, remain blessed.

The Cocktail Round Table in Your Room's Decor

A cocktail round table is a unique look that you can use in a room that is in need of a new conversation point. There can be a few different areas of conversation in a room when you make use of a variety of styles and shapes of tables.

    Round Coffe Tables

If you are decorating a particularly large room, a few of these tables will make a room come alive with activity. You should try this technique when you are decorating a room that will be used for entertaining. Your family room or living room are good places to use this type of table. You can also use these small cocktail round table areas in your other rooms as well. It all depends on the look of your home and what you are trying to accomplish in your décor.

    Round Coffe Tables

Try to keep the cocktail round table in the same design as your room. If your room is in a more contemporary and modern décor, you should make sure that the tables fit in with the rest of the room. For a modern room, look for metallic and glass tables for your room. Of course, you could also change the décor of the room to suit the table if you absolutely fall in love with it.

There are many places where you will be able to find tables for your home. You can look online for a much wider variety of furnishings than you will find in your local stores. Just make sure that when you are looking for your cocktail round table that you do some comparison shopping before you make a final decision on the table that you wish to purchase. You should also make sure that you are dealing with a reputable business. Online shopping can save you a great deal of time and also find you some fabulous deals.

    Bamboo Coffee Tables

Bamboo coffee tables are not tables from your favorite episode of Gilligan's Island. They are not shabby, deserted island furniture made out of coconuts and leaves.

    Round Coffe Tables

They are elegant pieces of furniture that are every bit as beautiful and functional as any other hardwood, glass, or iron coffee table. They are also just as sturdy and even more environmentally friendly.

    Round Coffe Tables

Simply put, bamboo coffee tables are great pieces of furniture that can really solidify a rooms design.

    What Is Bamboo?

Bamboo is not a type of wood. It is actually a type of grass. It takes a year to reach its full height (which can be as high as 40 feet!) and an additional 4 to 7 years to fully mature and harden.

After the 4 to 7 years is up it is ready to be harvested and made into coffee tables (or any other type of furniture).

This is one of the major differences between trees and bamboo. A tree may take more than a decade to fully mature while the bamboo only takes 4 to 7 years.

By the time it takes a tree to fully mature many shoots of bamboo can be harvested therefore it makes an ideal source material for coffee tables and other furniture.

What Are The Styles Of Bamboo Coffee Tables?

There are essentially 2 styles. One style looks similar to something you might see on a deserted island. It has a much more raw look. If you have a patio or a pool this style of table would fit in perfectly.

The other type looks like a more traditional, classical style of coffee table but the process involved in creating it is far from traditional.

The process used in creating this style of coffee table is highly involved. Bamboo is cut into strips, then boiled to make them resistant to the elements, then the strips are glued together. Once they are glued they are pressed together to make one piece that is layered.

The process involves cutting strips of bamboo, boiling them to make them resistant to the elements, and then gluing the strips together. The glued strips are then pressed together to make one layered piece.

At this point the bamboo can be shaped into a coffee table. Often light and dark shades and finishes are used so they resemble hardwood.

Are Bamboo Coffee Tables Harder To Clean?

    The answer is no.

    Not at all.

Bamboo tables can be cleaned just like any other wood furniture. All you need is a gentle wood furniture cleaner.

And just like any wood or hardwood furniture, the second there is a spill, you want to clean it up to avoid water marks or stains.

How to Clean Glass Top Round Kitchen Tables

Glass top kitchen tables is a perfect surface if you are looking for a surface that would not stain. Since glass is a not porous material, any liquid material that is accidentally spilled over will not stick and stain the surface and can easily be wiped off. But glass surfaces can also easily get dirty and look griming just by touching the glass. You can see the entire finger prints smudges all over the glass surface. The secret in cleaning and keeping your glass top round kitchen tables clean and shinny is to clean it very time right after you use it.

    Round Coffe Tables

But the best way to clean your glass table is to use cleaning agents other than water. Some have their own "secret weapon" in cleaning the grime, finger print smudges of the glass, and so if you have a preferred brand in cleaning glass, you can use that too. But if you want to use home-made solutions, you can try these.

    Round Coffe Tables

Before applying the cleaning solution on the glass top kitchen tables, you first need to wipe and take out all the large food particles on top of the table and use lint free cloth.

    Isopropyl Alcohol

You can apply a small amount of alcohol on the surface and spread the alcohol using the lint free cloth and wipe it off. Alcohol evaporates quickly so it will not leave water streaks on your glass table.

Equal Mixture of Isopropyl Alcohol and Warm Water

You put equal part of isopropyl alcohol and warm water in a sprayer bottle and then shake the bottle to mix the two liquids. Use the mixed solution to spray on the surface and wipe the dirt away with lint free cloth.

Mix of Warm Water, Isopropyl Alcohol and White vinegar

This can be a good alternative if you need to clean a really dirty glass table with smudges and sticky substances on the glass top. You can mix 1 cup of warm water, 1 cup of Isopropyl alcohol and 1 tablespoon of vinegar in a sprayer bottle and spray on the surface and wipe the table with lint free cloth.

    Lemon Juice

If you are put off with the smell of alcohol and vinegar, you can add lemon into the solution. You can use this:
    1/4 cup Isopropyl alcohol
    1/4 cup vinegar
    1 tablespoon lemon juice
    2 cups of water

Pour all of them in one sprayer bottle and shake well to mix. Reminder, never use lemon juice on glass top that has coating and other finished, it will destroy the coating. Then, once again, just spray the newly mixed solution and wipe off using a lint free cloth.

To keep your glass sparkling you can buff it with old new paper or coffee filters that are dampen with a little in water and rubbing alcohol. The paper texture will rub off the grimy film without leaving streaks.

Cleaning your glass top round kitchen tables is a matter of personal choice. You can try these suggestions to decide which of them works for you best. Try them out and you will enjoy your sparkling, streak-free glass table top for years to come. If your table is made of glass without a wooden frame, you can focus solely on the best way to keep the glass clean and streak free. Fingerprints and streaks will be more visible in direct sunlight. If your table is near a window, you will want to be extra careful to clean without leaving streaks.

    Coffee Drinks

These drinks are extremely popular, even among people who don't typically drink coffee. This recipe combines sweet apricots with chilled coffee to make a wonderful creamy drink. Serve it in tall glasses on a warm summer afternoon and delight the guests.

    Apricot Iced Coffee

3/4 cup chilled coffee 1/2 cup cup chilled apricot juice 1/2 pt softened vanilla ice cream. 1/2 cup of fresh apricots.

    Instructions:
Mix the coffee, milk and apricot nectar together in a bowl. Add the softened ice cream and beat until smooth. Blend fresh apricots in a blender until smooth. Pour the apricot mixture into a glass and top with the mixture.

For entertaining purposes, surprise guests with a punch. Offer liqueurs an optional add-in for those who would like to have them. Bailey's Irish Crème goes quite well with this recipe.

    Coffee Punch

    Ingredients

2 quarts of vanilla ice cream, softened. 2 quarts of strong brewed coffee, cooled. 2 cups of milk 2 cups of whipping cream, whipped. 1/2 cup of sugar. 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract Ground nutmeg.

    Instructions:

Combine the coffee, milk, sugar, and vanilla; stir thoroughly. Chill. Place the vanilla ice cream in a large punch bowl. Pour the coffee mixture over top of the ice cream, stirring gently. Top with whipped cream, sprinkle with nutmeg, and then serve.

On a cold winter morning, gather the family together for cake and a steaming cup of Mocha Coffee. Transfer the finished product to a thermal carafe and serve at the table or leave in a warming pot on the stove.

    Mocha Coffee

14 oz (one can) of evaporated milk 2 cups of strong coffee 1 cup of hot water 1/2 cup of pure cocoa powder 1/2 cup of sugar.

    Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Most people are only concerned with how coffee will wake them up to start the day,but contrary to what some health official would have you believe there are studies that show coffee actually has health benefits.

    Round Coffe Tables

These benefits include the link between coffee consumption & reduced risk of colon cancer, Parkinson's & diabetes due to the antioxidants in coffee,it can also help enhance your memory & performance. It can also help to relieve mild pain when very gentle exercise has been taken.Coffee has also been found to help with depression.Asthma sufferers have also revealed 25% fewer attacks, obviously these benefits vary from person to person and take into account a daily allowance of a moderate 2/4 cups a day.

    Round Coffe Tables

Most of the studies are just done with "coffee," not allowing for how it is brewed, the freshness of the beans etc. The studies may need to be refined to see if the fresher the coffee the more effect,or roast beans over ground coffee.Does it make a difference how long the coffee has been brewed for? We do know that drinking badly brewed coffee is not good for the body.

    COFFEE FACTS

Caffeine in 2 cups of coffee takes 30 minutes to take effect and can last several hours.

Coffee has long been used to sober up a drunk person but this is a myth and does not work.

When driving research has shown a 30 min break 1/2 cups of coffee & a 15min nap is the best combination to combat tiredness.

There is no evidence that coffee acts differently on men or woman.

Having 3 or 4 cups of coffee a day can aid liver function.

The effects of coffee are the same whether its espresso, cappuccino or instant.

Adding milk & sugar to the coffee does not have a detrimental affect on coffee.

Coffee can have a protective factor against Alzheimer's disease.

Coffee can help in the stiffness of joints associated with Parkinson's disease.

Caffeine in coffee increases alertness and reduces fatigues, improves vigilance and simple tasks that require longer spells of concentration.

So on the whole it is the same old adage "everything in moderation" yes coffee can be bad for the body, bit it can also have a lot of benefits, so do not feel too guilty when having that morning cuppa.

    Different Types Of Coffee Mugs

There are many different kinds of coffee mugs selling in the market, they come in different colors, shapes, sizes, styles and designs, so when people want to buy one, they have to think a lot about the details. Some of these mugs are great and some of them are not good enough, but different people just have their own choices. Some people like mugs made of plastic, some like the glass ones, some prefer stainless steel mugs and still there are some people who choose the porcelain ones. No matter which one they choose, they do have their own reasons.

    Round Coffe Tables

One thing you should be clear while purchasing your coffee mug is that mugs made of different materials have an effect on the taste of your coffee.

    Round Coffe Tables

The plastic mugs are common seen, but they are not good enough. As you know that when plastic encounters hot water, it will let out a smell and that smell can affect your coffee taste. If you want to drink original coffee, then it is better for you not to choose a plastic coffee mug.

The porcelain and glass mugs are also common to see, they can be of many different shapes and sizes, you can choose any one you like. This kind of coffee cups almost have no effect on the flavor of your coffee, so you can have a drink of the original coffee. What's more, this kind of mugs are reusable, so you can feel free to use them again and again.

The last type of coffee mug is the stainless steel ones. This kind of mugs can be used as travel coffee cups as they are tough enough, it is not easy to do harm to stainless steel mugs. And there is no effect on the taste of coffee, you can enjoy your sweet coffee.

The Coffee Culture in the USA

It wasn't until I moved to the US that I started drinking coffee regularly and became what they call in the Netherlands a 'koffieleut', which translates literally into 'coffee socialite.' Although the average European drinks more coffee per year than the average American, the cultural importance and its effects on the average European seems to me smaller than that on the average American. After all, coffee is a cultural obsession in the United States.

    Round Coffe Tables

Chains with thousands of branches like Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks dominate US daily street life. Especially in the morning (90% of coffee consumed in the US is in the morning), millions of white foamy cups with boldly imprinted pink and orange logos bob across the streets in morning rush hour and on the train. Coffee drive-ins are a saving grace for the rushing army of helmeted and tattooed construction workers. During lunch break, men and women in savvy business suits duck into coffee shops.

    Round Coffe Tables

Students chill out from early afternoon till late evening on comfy couches at coffee lounges around campus. Police officers clutch coffee cups while guarding road construction sites on the highway. In short, coffee drinkers in the United States can be found just about anywhere you go.

This mass-psychotic ritual causes Americans to associate Europe above all with cars that oddly do not contain cup holders (to an American this is like selling a car without tires), or with the unbelievably petite cups of coffee European restaurants serve, so small that my father-in-law had to always order two cups of coffee. It is my strongest conviction that the easily agitated and obsessed nature of the 'New Englander' can be blamed on the monster-size cups of coffee they consume. Not without reason is the word 'coffee' derived from the Arab 'qahwa' meaning 'that which prevents sleep.' Arabs have cooked coffee beans in boiling water since as far back as the 9th century and drank the stimulating extract as an alternative to the Muslims' forbidden alcohol.

These days coffee is second only to oil as the most valuable (legally) traded good in the world with a total trade value of billion. Interestingly, only billion reaches coffee producing countries. The remaining billion is generated as surplus value in the consumption countries. Small farmers grow 70% of world coffee production. They mainly grow two kinds of coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta. About 20 million people in the world are directly dependent on coffee production for their subsistence.Table 1: production in 2002/3

    country % 70% Arabica

    30% Robusta

    Brasil 42.03% Arab/Rob

    Colombia 8.88% Arabica

    Vietnam 8.35% Robusta

    Indonesia 4.89% Rob/Arab

    India 3.74% Arab/Rob

    Mexico 3.54% Arabica

    Guatemala 3.1% Arab/Rob

    Uganda 2.53% Rob/Arab

    Ethiopia 2.44% Arabica

Peru 2.24% ArabicaTable 2: consumption in 2001/2world consumption % kg per capita (2001)

    USA 30.82% Finland 11.01

    Germany 15.07% Sweden 8.55

    Japan 11.47% Denmark 9.71

    France 8.89% Norway 9.46

    Italy 8.59% Austria 7.79

    Spain 4.90% Germany 6.90

    Great-Brittain 3.63% Switzerland 6.80

the Netherlands 2.69% the Netherlands 6.48

Although the consumption of coffee per capita in the world is decreasing (in the US alone it decreased from 0.711 liter in 1960 to 0.237 liter presently), world consumption is still increasing due to the population explosion. Considering that coffee consists of either 1% (Arabica), 2% (Robusta) or 4.5%-5.1% (instant coffee) caffeine, the average American consumes at least 200 to 300mg (the recommended maximum daily amount) of caffeine a day through the consumption of coffee alone.

The place I frequent to down a cup of coffee is the Starbucks in Stamford, Connecticut. The entrance can be found on the corner of Broad Street and Summer Street, to the left to the main public library with its plain pediment and slim Ionic columns. The location right next to the library harmonizes with Starbuck's marketing plan. At the entrance of the coffee shop a life-size glass window curves around to the left, providing superb voyeuristic views of pedestrians on the sidewalk. As you enter, you step directly into the living room area with stacked bookshelves against the back wall. Velvet armchairs face each other with small coffee tables in the middle, creating intimate seating areas. The velvet chairs near the window are the prime seats, which people unfortunate to score a wooden chair prey upon. At the back of the long rectangular room is the coffee bar and a small Starbuck's gift shop. There is a dark wooden table with electrical outlets suited for spreading out laptops and spreadsheets, dividing the living room area from the coffee bar.

Since I have been cranky for weeks I hesitate to order a regular black coffee. It is very easy to get cloyed with a favorite food or drink in the US because of the super-sized portions served. The smallest cup of coffee is a size 'tall' (12oz.=0.35l.), after which one can choose between a 'grande' (16oz.=0.5l.) and a 'venti' (20oz.=0.6l.). Half a liter of coffee seems a bit over the top, and it sounds absolutely absurd to my European mind. I finally end up choosing a 'solo' espresso.

Sitting in one of the booth-like seats against the back wall, unable to obtain a prime seat, I feign to read my book while eavesdropping on conversations around to me. Three middle-aged men sit in three ash gray velvet chairs and converse loudly. A vivid dialogue develops, exchanged with half roaring, half shrieking, laughter. They mock a colleague in his absence and then clench their brows in concern while discussing the teeth of one of the men's daughter. Two African-American women sit at a small table opposite the reading-table in the murky light, one of them with a yellow headscarf with black African motifs. Close to the entrance, in the seating area next to the animated conversation, a vagabond is playing solitaire. One by one he places the creased cards with rounded backs over one another, as if he attempts to stick them together. He rendered a couple of dollars in exchange for a small coffee to feel, in the warmth of the front room, nostalgia for a cozy living room and relives a sense of intimacy of having your own house.

It's a bright, sunny, early autumn day, a typical New England Indian summer. Sunbeams radiate through the coloring, flickering foliage, and throw a puzzle-shaped shadow into Starbuck's window. Autumn's hand turns her colorful kaleidoscopic lens. The green ash tree near the sidewalk resembles, with its polychrome colors, somewhat a bronze statue: its stem sulphur bronze, its foliage intermittently copper green and ferric-nitrate golden. On the other side of the cross walk the top of a young red oak turns fiery red. These are the budding impressions of the autumn foliage for which Connecticut is 'world famous' in the US.

In the world of marketing and entrepreneurship, Starbucks is a success story. It is one of those stories of 'excellence' taught as a case study at business school. Founded in 1971, it really began its incredible growth under Howard Schultz in 1985, and presently has 6,294 coffee shops. But what does its success really consists of? A large cup of coffee at Starbucks is much more expensive than at Dunkin' Donuts: .69 compared to .40 for a Starbucks' 'venti'. But while Dunkin' Donuts offers only a limited assortment of flavors like mocha, hazelnut, vanilla, caramel and cinnamon, you will find exotic quality beans at Starbucks like Bella Vista F.W. Tres Rios Costa Rica, Brazil Ipanema Bourbon Mellow, Colombia Nariño Supremo, Organic Shade Grown Mexico, Panama La Florentina, Arabian Mocha Java, Caffè Verona, Guatemala Antigua Elegant, New Guinea Peaberry, Zimbabwe, Aged Sumatra, Special Reserve Estate 2003 - Sumatra Lintong Lake Tawar, Italian Roast, Kenya, Ethiopia Harrar, Ethiopia Sidamo, Ethiopia Yergacheffe and French Roast. So Starbucks offers luxury coffees and high quality coffee dining, reminiscent almost of the chic coffee houses I visited in Vienna.

Every now and then, I grin shamefully and think back at my endless hesitation choosing between the only two types of coffee available in most Dutch stores: red brand and gold brand. Even up to this day I have no clue what the actual difference is between the two, apart from the color of the wrapping: red or gold. Not surprisingly, Starbucks appeals to the laptop genre of people: consultants, students, intellectuals, the middle class, and a Starbucks coffee is a white-collar coffee, while a Dunkin' Donuts coffee is a blue-collar coffee. In Dunkin' Donuts you will run into Joe the Plumber, Bob the barber, and Mac the truck driver. But what is it exactly, that attracts the white collared workers in the US to fall back into the purple velvet chairs?

I imagine their working days filled with repetitive actions and decisions within a playing field of precisely defined responsibilities. How many of the players in these fields get through the day with its routines for simply no other reason than being able to enjoy their daily 30 minutes-escape into the Starbucks intimacy where, for a brief moment in the day, you regain the illusion of human warmth and exotic associations of resisting the coldness of high finance?

For 15 minutes you fall back into the deep, soft pillow of a velvet chair and randomly, and alas how important is that moment of utter randomness, pull a book from the shelves. While, in the background, soothing tones resound of country blues, with its recognition of deep human suffering, a blaze of folk with the primary connection with nature and tradition, or of merengue reviving the passionate memories of adventure and love, you gaze out the window and ponder about that simple, volatile reflection in the moment, strengthened by the physical effect of half a liter of watery coffee that starts to kick in and the satisfaction of chewing your muffin, bagel, cake, brownie, croissant or donut.

It is, above all, that bodily ecstasy caused by a combination of caffeine, sugar and the salivating Pavlov effect. You remember the struggling musician behind the counter taking your order, the amateur poet as you pay her for the coffee and give a full dollar tip, feeling a transcendental bound in your flight from reality. You stare with a fastened throbbing of the first gulps of coffee at the advertisements and poems on the bulletin board, and dauntlessly you think: They are right, they are so right! and what do I care? Why should I care?

But then you look at your watch and notice you really have to run again. 'Well, too bad, gotta go!', or people will start gossiping for being so long away from your desk. And while you open the door, an autumn breeze blows in your face, the last tunes of the blues solo die out as the Hammond organ whispers: 'I throw my troubles out the door, I don't need them anymore'.

Coffee in the US is a subculture that massively floated to the surface of the consumer's society. Starbucks is more than coffee, it's more than just another brand on the market, it is a social-political statement, a way of perceiving how you would like to live, in other words it is a culture. Starbucks is the alternative to Coca-Cola and so much more than just coffee: it's chocolate, ice-cream, frappuccino, travel mugs with exotic prints, cups and live music, CD's, discounts on exhibitions and even support for volunteer work.
